Cheap Weight Loss

Cheap Health Foods - You can diet on a budget, just stick with the cheaper foods, plan meals in order to avoid wasting food and take advantage of sales and coupons

  • Bananas -$1.50/5 bananas
  • Apples - $1.50/lb
  • Pineapple (whole) - $2.98/6 servings
  • Bunched Spinach - $1.60/bundle
  • Whole Wheat Bread - $1.80/loaf
  • Sandwich meat - $3/5 sandwiches worth of meat
  • Almond Milk - The same price as cow’s milk
  • Dried beans - $2/bag
*** You can avoid wasting fruit and vegetables by using those that are close to spoiling for smoothies and freezing them
*** Check with grocery store staff to see when certain departments are cheaper. For example, at my Kroger, meats are all on sale on Sundays.
*** Buy in bulk and freeze
*** Share a Costco or Sam’s membership with friends and buy in bulk. Berries at Sam’s are far cheaper than other grocery stores

Cheap Exercise - Although it’s easier, you don’t need a gym membership to lose weight.
  • Take advantage of free (aka paid for by your tuition) memberships to your university gym if you are a college student
  • Take advantage of your apartment complex gym if there is one
  • Replace a stair-stepper with climbing up hills in your neighborhood
  • Do bodyweight exercises that you already know such as crunches, lunges, and push ups
  • Buy a pair of (or even one) 5-10 lb. dumbells and a medicine ball and use the free Nike Training Club app for bodyweight exercises at home
  • Go running outside using the free Nike+ running app that tracks your speed, distance, and records the data so you can see your progress over time

Cheap Attire - I have a bone to pick with “nike swag” addicts. You don’t need a new wardrobe to work out, you just need tennis shoes, a sports bra, some shorts and t-shirts. Many people have most of this at home already

  • For summer outdoor workouts, you can make your unused t-shirts into tank tops by cutting the sleeves off and braiding the remainder (pinterest has great instructions on this)
  • For indoor workouts, you really don’t need anything special other than flexible clothing and tennis shoes
  • Shop at consignment stores for workout clothes if you don’t already have a collection of tshirts and athletic shorts
